Brilliance......With A Capital "B"
Unsung Heroes Vol. 1.............................................................................................................Doug Stone- Minneapolis Mn.
There is a tremendous amount of " top notch", truly innovative music kicking around Cyberspace.. but there is a lot of really bad stuff out there , too.
Trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, can become a grueling task.
MP3.Com, Riffage, Rolling Stone, and several other services have "arrived on the scene" recently, and have given the Independent Artist exposure and promotional opportunities that none of us (let alone the Major Labels) imagined, even five years ago, in our wildest dreams.
These Services have found a group of twenty five or so artists... that are their "anchor" artists. To their credit, the ones that they have chosen are phenomenal talents. They have introduced the world to Ernesto Cortezar , MaDDoLL, Penny Framstad, Ginger Mackenzie, Fisher, Bassic, Gnomusy, Lucky Seven...... and many others too numerous to mention.... and they deserve every bit of the exposure they have received .....and more.
The most popular artists will always be featured here.
The purpose of this column , however, is to spotlight other "brilliant" MP3 artists who are tremendously talented and have not yet received the accolades and the recognition of their peers.
In each issue we will cruise cruise along the road less traveled and you have my promise.....and one from your music-lovin' Mayor, that we will be revealing some of those "little golden needle's" that are hiding in the "big haystack of independent music."
Here is this months
"Hidden Gold"
David's Music can be summed up in one Word..... Impeccable. David has a Ph.D. in music composition from Rutgers University (1978), has been visiting lecturer in jazz at Harvard University (1977), and is currently Professor of Music and Coordinator of the Music Discipline at York College (CUNY), where he teaches composition, computer music and music theory. He is a member of BMI and The Society of Composers & Lyricists. His music has been broadcast worldwide, including the National Radio of Argentina, Radio ROKS in Moscow, and the Foundation Gaudeamus in the Netherlands. His recordings include Four Preludes for Piano [Jeff Jacob, pianist, Contemporary American Eclectic Music for the Piano, Ariel CD #AE 001, 1995], Crossover for Orchestra [Slovak Radio Symphony, MMC New Century - Volume 1, CD #MMC 2015, 1995], and Exit for Trumpet and Tape [Jack Logan, trumpet, New Music for Trumpet, Orion #ORS 7294, 1972]. He was also pianist for the Crown Heights Affair Sure Shot album [De-Lite #DSR 9517, 1979]. David has recently been working on a Jazz CD project with the great Mark Adams that you will want to look out for. The CD is called "Asceticism" Two of his jazz tracks Club Carib and Free Day will be featured. David even sits on every once in awhile. This should be quite a dynamic project. Keep a watch out for this one. As the Mayor says "I'll bet it's gonna be Killer" The Doug Stone Challenge: Click on the site below and if you are not totally knocked
out.... I'll be amazed !!

One of the opening songs on the Charter Residents page is Arthur's Rendition of "Bolero" The Mayor told me that work "Knocked him out"....so I checked Art out.... and instantly knew I would be derelict in my responsilbility if I didn't Include him on this list. One listen to Arts Material and you know you are listening to "a mind blowing major monster composer of epic stature." But forget what I have to say. Go listen for yourself....

The Mayor asked me to review Mikes stuff and my
first thoughts were, Neal, you mention this guy all the time..... why do
you want me to mention him again?
Well, I have to say that I have never been partial to trumpet and flugelhorn playing..... till now. See that conch he's holding in the picture.... he actually plays it on one of the tracks and man oh man, I can't get this guys music out of my head. I still don't think I'll ever be a "brass fanatic" .... but I'll buy anything this guy puts out. His music is totally awesome....
|
Krohn is an "exceptionally talented composer/artist and he has either worked with or produced music for some of the biggest names in the business... even an "ex-beatle" His New Caribbean Cd will knock you out. Here is a short bio of his achievements: Krohn has performed both as an engineer and studio musician on projects with major artist and producers nationwide from Los Angeles to Miami. Artist include Jeff Baxter, Bob Esty, Ron Stone, Robb Brothers, Allen Perriser, Shelly Yakas, Weird Al, Toto, Carl Wilson, Burton Cummings, The Cars, Roy Thomas Baker, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Donavan, John Mellencamp, Billy Vera, Bill Pfordresser, Ringo Starr, Danny Elfman, and many more Check out his stuff---- be amazed !!

The Mayor told me about Joe. He said "Doug, this guys
music belongs in the Unsung Composer article your writing".
I said Ok and perused the top 40. Sure enough.....found Joe in there.....with
a top 40 hit in the MP3 Genre Surf Rock.
Neal wrote back---- "Check out his web site" Well, I did..... and The Toto-Meister is gyrating above you in living color. If you are expecting Jan and Dean covering the
Beach
Boys (like I was)..... read no further....
Better Yet.... on the serious side: this guy has been
really tearing up the latin and salsa charts.
Joe lists his chief musical influences as: Raybeats, Ventures, Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, MJQ, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, David Bromberg, Albert Collins, Herb Alpert, Henry Mancini, Elmer Bernstein His music is all over the board.... and defies description. One minute you'll swear your listening to Dick Dale and the Del-Tones......and the next you'll find yourself listening to "soaring clarinets" and "Big Band Jazz" His song titles give away his zaniness. Anyone who can come up with a title like Blackjack Polka and then pull it off deserves an award for "Wacko Genius" He even takes the Old 007 James Bond things to task with
his "Double Agent"
"Welcome!
World Beats and Jazz
¡Bamboleo! (Salsa)
Surf Vortex is a former # 1 on the MP3.com and AMP3.com surf charts that has been one of my most requested surf tracks. And if you like that sound be sure to listen to the power trio surf of Breakdown, and old favorites Sunstroke and Double Agent! Vortex
Put a big smile on your face and brighten your day with
a stop at Joes Palace. You will love his zany approach to the music
world....and while your in there check out the latin stuff that demonstrates
what a truly brilliant composer he is.
