Supergroup
From Down Under?
Down Under (and in the outback) Grover Jones
strikes guitar chords with abandon. This group is putting out some strange
vibes. It's kind of like they are inventing their own style of rock, something
savage, and they don't care who is uncomfortable with it.
It's a vagrant feel that rocks with edges that
aren't always in tune. And you get the feeling they don't care. They are
just going to rock, no matter what.
When the lead singer is on top of whatever melody
is happening, he has a unique voice.
It strays, like the music does, and sometimes
the dissonance almost fits, sounds planned and desired, to purposely jolt
us.
I don't know, but this formula they are
cooking up is a brew not fully cooked yet. It's raw and uneven beat must
be applauded if only because it is so very different from any of
the so-called alternative stuff we are hearing these days.
Before we point fingers in terms of quality,
let's remember how much The Rolling Stones were out of tune when playing
live in their early years. How dirty their music sounded, what they did
to the blues in translation.
Let's wait and hear where Grover Jones is going
with all of this.

May Day-
May Day !!
If I were to hand out stars for the artists who put
together what I feel is the total
package, five being best, May Child would get
the lot.
Yvon Roberge leads this group into pop/rock
territory that we don't visit enough. Groups like Liar's Club, Jellyfish
and others who suffered the brunt of grunge while delivering terrific electric
pop are joined by May Child in their own Pop/Rock Hall of Fame.
'The Warrior' is a terrific tune put together
with integrity. Great vocals, tight harmonies, dynamics of arrangement
and posh production make it a small classic in its genre. Where is that
genre on mp3.com? Dunno. The site needs a new one for groups like this.
In 'Feelin'' the group rocks a bit more.
What a great opening tune this would be for May Child's club act. The same
tightness and attention to the song are delivered here.'Picture Of You'
proves my point entirely. May Child can deliver tight, colorful pop acoustically,
too. With melodies and care.
Paying attention to the integrity of your
product is essential to expressing yourself;
more so than delivering a tech-perfect project.
Too many artists spend too much time worrying about the tech side of things
when the art of it holds all of the fundamentals.
May Child has bridged the integrity of composition
into performance with the finer attributes of modern technology. This is
a group, I fear, will suffer from the times. That is, the general
audience isn't going full blast for this kind of material. It's a shame,
but it is also cyclical and when the audience comes around again to appreciate
the art of pop, May Child will deserve the attention it receives.
If I were to hand out stars for the artists who
put together what I feel is the total package, five being best, May Child
would get the lot.

Culture Club
What a joy. Amid the clashing of guitars, the banging of backbeats and
the struggling for
melodies comes a middle-of-the-road wonder, coloring the pages of mp3.com
with the flavor of European pop.
Senior Merlo's material, most of it in a language other than English,
is simply delightful. I realize many of the artists on mp3.com, especially
in rock and alternative, are ready to stamp Merlo's stuff as hokey and
lame. This is probably why the artists who would do that are lacking a
certain class in their own music. Merlo's stuff is mighty in a traditional
respect that cannot be denied and certainly should be listened to by artists
who have nothing to do with this genre.
To learn. To be exposed to other things, the kind of things that can
open up the creative
process. Merlo's songs are solid and he delivers them confidently.
He is a pure artist with an innocence not found often in a 40-year-old
(I don't have it at 50).
I urge all of you to take a journey; go to Merlo's site, sit back with
a glass of wine,
strong coffee, a smoke; open the window nearest you and feel the breeze;
and listen...

D-Piano-Man...
By now, readers of these reviews must be well aware of my penchant for
the 'unobvious'
and the magic of the element of surprise and originality in songs. However,
I can still hear
a rock-solid standard that is well-constructed and perfectly organized.
Duvall's 'Never Be Free' incorporates every smart element a standard must
have. This
melodic torch song, though it covers the usual territory, is a template
for how to take
the usual territory and give it a fresh spin.
The lyrics emote the feeling of chaos love is, certainly when rejected,
and they cover
every angle with a memorable melody and inspired performance.
Even if you don't like this kind of music you have to respect its honesty
and strength as
it is delivered. If more of the hard-rockers on mp3.com extracted elements
from songs
like this and translated them into their own voices, it would be amazing
how musical
ground could be broken and not just trampled on again and again.
Fine work, Duvall.
